CARPOOL's Personal Experience
In October of 1997, CARPOOL’s founder Jeff Schiefelbein received a DWI in College Station. One condition of his probation was that he was required to attend a Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Victim Impact panel. It was there that he heard a mother recount her story of her high school daughter’s death due to a drunk driver. He became inspired to create a program that the College Station community could rely on after a night out. CARPOOL began its first night of operations in September of 1999 and it became the first program of its kind.
Sixteen years later, CARPOOL continues to work with the Bryan/College Station community to help give free, safe, and nonjudgmental rides home. It has given over 250,000 rides and has helped other college campuses create safe ride programs of their own.
